Safari Overview

Witness one of the most harmonious yet dramatic wildlife spectacles on Earth with our 4-day Wildebeest, Zebra & Calves Safari across Arusha → Ndutu → Southern Serengeti → Ngorongoro Crater → Arusha. Each year between January and March, over two million wildebeests and half a million zebras congregate on the volcanic short-grass plains of Ndutu. Here, a unique symbiotic grazing dynamic unfolds: zebras crop the tall, fibrous grasses to expose the tender, calcium-rich shoots required by lactating wildebeest mothers. Together, these mega-herds give birth to over 8,000 calves and foals every day. This mass nursery attracts Africa's premier big cats, including cheetahs hunting across the open plains, lion prides on rocky kopjes, and leopards in the acacia woodlands. Travel in a customized 4x4 Land Cruiser with permitted off-road driving privileges in Ndutu, enjoy quality lodge and tented camp hospitality, and conclude with an unforgettable Big Five tour inside the legendary Ngorongoro Crater caldera.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Wildebeest and zebras share a famous symbiotic grazing relationship. Zebras eat the taller, fibrous top grasses, opening up the nutrient-rich short grass shoots favored by wildebeest mothers. Zebras also possess sharp eyesight and memory of migratory routes, while wildebeest have keen hearing and scent, providing mutual protection against predators.

Over 8,000 wildebeest calves and hundreds of zebra foals are born daily during peak calving season between January and March. This synchronised birthing swamps predators, ensuring a high survival rate for the newborns.

Remarkably, a newborn wildebeest calf can stand within 3 to 7 minutes of birth and run with the herd within 15 minutes, allowing it to keep pace with the moving columns and evade predators.

The route is: Arusha → Ndutu Plains (Day 1) → Southern Serengeti & Ndutu Ecosystem (Day 2) → Southern Serengeti to Ngorongoro Crater Rim (Day 3) → Ngorongoro Crater Floor & Return to Arusha (Day 4).

The abundance of vulnerable calves attracts Africa's top predators in huge numbers, including cheetahs sprinting across the open plains, lion prides coordinating hunts, leopards along acacia riverbeds, spotted hyenas, and black-backed jackals.

Yes, in the Ndutu sector of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, respectful off-road driving is permitted. This allows guides to position vehicles close to active calving events, zebra herd interactions, and predator stalks.

We stay in high-quality mid-range and luxury lodges and mobile tented camps located directly in the migratory corridors, such as Ndutu Safari Lodge, Ang'ata Ndutu Camp, Lake Masek Tented Lodge, and Ngorongoro Rhino Lodge or Serena Lodge on the crater rim.

The 600m-deep Ngorongoro Crater is a self-contained Eden hosting the Big Five (black rhinos, giant bull elephants, lion prides, leopards, buffalo) alongside resident wildebeest and zebra herds and thousands of flamingos on Lake Magadi.

Yes, we operate this safari as a private custom tour for couples, families, and friends, as well as scheduled small group join-in departures for solo travelers seeking camaraderie and great value.

Pack lightweight safari-neutral clothing (khaki, beige, olive), a warm fleece or jacket for chilly mornings on the crater rim, wide-brim sun hat, high-SPF sunscreen, binoculars, and a camera with a telephoto zoom lens.
